One of the film’s taglines is ‘Our memories make us who we are. However, Joel’s memories are slowly erased. Much of the film takes place within Joel’s memories as he attempts to preserve them. However, while unconscious, he realises he does not want to lose his memories of Clementine. Upon discovering that Clementine has had the procedure, Joel decides to also remove all memories of their relationship. who specialise in selectively removing unwanted memories. After a fight, Clementine has all knowledge of their relationship erased by a clinic called Lacuna Inc. They are not aware that they have previously met, let alone that they have been in a relationship for the past two years. They are enigmatically drawn to each other despite their different personalities. This prompts consideration of whether Joel and Clementine have the same identities after undergoing the memory erasing procedure.Įternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) tells the story of Joel (Jim Carey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet).
